Need a break amidst greenery? Some chlorophyll therapy? We know a few parks that are ideal for daydreaming in the grass, playing with children, or sitting on a bench with a good book! And if we had to pick just one, it would of course be the Parc du Moulin à Tan, with its enchanting surroundings in all seasons… but since you’d like to know more, we’ll share some other green treasures with you !
The parc du Moulin à Tan, an absolute must
Everyone in Sens knows the Parc du Moulin à Tan. People come here at any time of day, to relax, jog, take a stroll with their families, visit the animals at the mini farm or marvel at the ever-changing colours of the park. We should also mention the exotic scenery of the tropical greenhouses and their star piece the giant Victoria Cruziana waterlily. So, after your visit, are you too willing to award this park the “Remarkable Garden” label it has held since 2011?

The Parc du Moulin à Tan is the star, the absolute must-see park of the Sénonais. Then there are the lesser-known places, those that are hidden within the walls of the town centre and which we would quite happily keep to ourselves. Well, OK… we’ll let you in on our three favourite parks, but don’t tell anyone else!
In the heart of the town, the jardin de l’orangerie
If there is one garden you could walk straight past without seeing, it is the Orangery Garden, despite its location right next to the cathedral and museums, There is nothing strange about this, as it was the archbishops’ private garden, typically small and enclosed. It nestles behind the high walls of the former archiepiscopal palace and you have to go through a porch to get to it. Its flowerbeds – Renaissance on one side and French-style on the other – are filled with beautiful flowers. Plants are no longer stored over winter in the Orangery building : which instead houses temporary exhibitions.
The Ballastière, a nature park
Splish. Splash. There is a different atmosphere in the Parc de la Ballastière. It centres on a large pond, surrounded by trees and greenery promising calm, serenity and relaxation. Less obvious are the frogs sheltering among the reeds. Perfect if you want to take a walk closer to nature than in the Parc du Moulin à Tan.
For romantics, The Île d’Amour
One for the road? If truth be told, what we are about to describe is neither really a park nor a garden. Are you still interested? Make your way to the middle of old Saint Nicholas Bridge in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne. A small set of steps leads you onto the Ile d’Amour, the Island of Love. For the photographers that you are, this is a perfect vantage point for taking a photo of Tour Bonneville or the quays. For walkers and visitors, it also offers a moment of calm and intimacy. To be savoured lovingly!
