Live to the rythm of feasts and festivals

Every season has its own festivals! Those rooted in tradition, like Sens Fair, or those more recent but already successful, like the Lumières of Sens, are all important gatherings that the inhabitants of the Sénonais and neighbouring areas look forward to with anticipation. Find out what else is happening throughout the year in our online calendar !

FEAST OF THE ASS

When? One to two weeks, latter weeks of January.

In the middle of winter, these cultural festivities warm the visitors up! The town becomes the stage for events inspired by medieval traditions, including dance, concerts and folk tales. The event, which is unique and specific to Sens, is organised by the vocal ensemble, Obsidienne, and Town of Sens.

THE “LE SENS DE L’HUMOUR” FESTIVAL

When? End of March. Two days.

Since the success of its first run in 2016, the Round Table and Ladies Circle have been making sure this comedy festival lives on by inviting popular comedians, both new and established talents over one weekend. All proceeds go to the cystic fibrosis association "Vaincre la Mucoviscidose".

SENS FAIR

When? Five days including the last weekend of April and 1st May.

The funfair lasts longer (traditionally one week before and after the fair). The fair is one of the biggest events of the year in Sens. If you need convincing, here are some figures that speak volumes: 350 stallholders at the fair, 80 rides at the funfair and more than 100,000 visitors every year at an event which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2017. It is one of the last free outdoor fairs in the heart of the town centre.

For one weekend, the car park on Place Jean Jaurès, a few steps from the cathedral, turns into a huge stage that can accommodate up to 5000 people. The programme is free and includes a dance show performed by an international company on the Friday evening and a day of concerts on the Saturday with a mix of stars from the French music scene (such as Ben l’Oncle Soul in 2017 and Yaël Naïm in 2016) and local groups from the Sénonais.

SAINT FIACRE’S FEAST DAY

When? One Sunday at the beginning of September.

Saint Fiacre’s Day, the feast of plants and gardeners, is traditionally celebrated in Sens. The interior of Sens Cathedral blooms with huge bouquets for the occasion, wheelbarrows of flowers compete for the prize of most beautiful wheelbarrow and are paraded through the streets of the town centre. At the Parc du Moulin à Tan, a plant fair brings together those who love and are passionate about plants.

EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS

When? Two days in mid-September.

As in the rest of France, the Sénonais participates in culture and heritage days. This weekend is an opportunity to enter places that are not usually accessible to the public, such as the gardens of the Château de Fleurigny, , the storerooms of the Museums of Sens or to join a special tour of the Carnot Museum and Gallery.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

When? Weekend in December.

To feel the magic of Christmas in December in the Sénonais, there is nothing better than visiting Sens Christmas Market. In the heart of the old town, between the cathedral and the covered market little wooden chalets, fir trees and of course Father Christmas’ house spring up for the weekend! The Christmas markets in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne and Saint-Clément are also worth visiting with all the entertainment they have to offer.
